Ukraine launched four US-supplied Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) targeting the Russian city of Voronezh in the country's southwest, marking a key development in its long-range strike capabilities. The attack represents the first confirmed use of ATACMS inside Russian territory after months of Pentagon-imposed restrictions.

Ukraine's General Staff acknowledged the missile strike, emphasizing it as a demonstration of their steadfast resolve to defend their sovereignty. While specific targets were not detailed, analysts suggest military facilities such as the Baltimor airbase and Pogonovo training ground may have been struck.

Russian Defense Ministry reported that advanced air defense systems, including the S-400 and Pantsir, intercepted all missiles. Despite this, debris from the intercepted missiles caused damage to civilian structures like a retirement home and an orphanage in Voronezh, though no casualties were reported. Russia retaliated by launching Iskander-M missiles that destroyed two Ukrainian rocket launchers in the Kharkiv region.

The missile strike signals a notable shift in US policy. Previously, under the Trump administration, Ukraine's use of ATACMS missiles was heavily restricted, requiring Pentagon approval for each strike and resulting in denials. However, in November 2024, former President Joe Biden lifted these limitations, permitting Ukraine to target military sites within Russia. These missiles have a range of about 300 kilometers, enabling Ukraine to strike deep into Russian territory.

This long-range strike came amid a massive Russian aerial offensive on Ukraine, which saw over 470 drones and 48 missiles launched at Ukrainian cities, causing significant casualties and widespread disruption.

The event underscores the evolving military dynamics in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, highlighting both Ukraine's expanding tactical reach with Western-supplied weaponry and the ongoing intense combat conditions on both sides.
